Botran Roajú celebrates its legacy by paying homage to the land of rum and the land of wine, claiming the origins and the journey of the Botran family
Challenge
Botran, the prestigious Guatemalan rum brand founded in 1940, needed to highlight the uniqueness of its new blend, finished in Burgos wine barrels. This rum explores new connections between the worlds of wine and rum, using exclusive barrels that few have the chance to acquire.
Approach
To tackle this challenge, we delved into the history of the Botran family. We stumbled upon the historical coincidence that the family's roots trace back to Roa de Duero (Burgos); the very place from which the barrels that make this rum so special come. For Morillas, this discovery propelled the narrative and visual identity of this blend, paying tribute not only to the rum's finish but also to the family's roots.
Solution
Thanks to this fascinating story, the name Botran Roajú was born: Roa del Duero (Spain) and Xelahú (Guatemala) speak of the wine and land of the blend. We crafted a narrative that allowed us to tell the story of the entire Botran family’s original journey to Guatemala, and the return journey of the Master Rum Makers, giving rise to this blend. Visually, a mix of classic and contemporary elements portray the transatlantic journey, which involved layering labels with a map of Burgos, the passport of Venancio (the eldest brother), the Master Rum Makers’ travel passes, and the original ticket from the Spanish Transatlantic Company on the bottle's collar. Additionally, a temporal parallelism effect was achieved by combining historical and modern typographies. A rum that unites origin and design, through a transatlantic journey in a bottle.
